Definition of Kumiko Craftsmanship
About Kumiko
First, it uses solid wood.
This is not merely a choice of material, but a reflection of a commitment to facing the challenges of Japan’s forests and forestry, and to carrying them into the future.
Second, it is the craftsmanship of assembling wood pieces together.
Rather than carving from a single board, each component supports one another,
forming a self-sustaining structure—this is both the origin of the word kumiko and its essence.
Third, it is the pursuit of seamless precision.
The commitment to achieving the highest level of precision reflects the very integrity of the craftsman.
We draw a clear line to preserve and cultivate the techniques and pride upheld by Japanese kumiko craftsmen.
So that authenticity may be faithfully carried into the future—and shared with the world.
While the term “kumiko” is becoming more widespread, there is an increasing number of “kumiko-style” products that merely imitate the appearance, such as those made from resin materials using 3D printers or plywood carved with NC routers and laser cutters.
If the idea that beauty is all that matters makes us forget the essence, eventually only the word will remain, and the technique and philosophy will be lost.
That is why we at Tanihata clearly define kumiko craftsmanship.
